Welcome to Top Dog Joint Health. By accessing or using this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
About This Site
Top Dog Joint Health is written for people sharing their home with an older dog who is slowing down. We test joint supplements, orthopedic beds, car and truck ramps, rear-support lift harnesses and non-slip socks in a real house with hardwood floors and stairs, on camping trips and out on the lake, and we tell you what helped, what did not, and when it is time to call your vet instead.

Senior Dog Safety
Nothing on this site is veterinary advice. Limping, sudden lameness, crying out when touched, swelling, or a dog that will not put weight on a leg can mean an injury, an infection or a serious illness rather than ordinary arthritis. See your veterinarian before assuming it is just age.
Talk to your vet before starting any joint supplement, especially if your dog takes prescription pain medication, has kidney or liver disease, diabetes or a shellfish allergy, or is about to have surgery. Never give your dog human pain relievers such as ibuprofen, naproxen or acetaminophen; they can be toxic to dogs.
Ramps, steps and lift harnesses only help when they fit. Check weight ratings against your dog's real weight, set ramps on a stable, non-slip surface at a gentle angle, stay beside your dog for the first sessions, and stop if a harness rubs, pinches or restricts breathing. Remove non-slip socks regularly to check paws for redness or swelling, and never leave them on an unsupervised dog. Older dogs overheat quickly, so keep outings short in hot weather and never leave a dog in a parked vehicle.
